Understanding hallmark verification
What is hallmark verification?
Hallmarking is the certification of the precious-metal purity of a gold or silver article. Under BIS rules a hallmarked article carries a HUID — a Hallmark Unique Identification number, six alphanumeric characters — laser-engraved on the piece and recorded in the hallmark register.
Hallmark verification is the check that reads that HUID against the register and confirms it is genuine — returning the material and purity, the article type and weight, the date it was hallmarked, the assaying and hallmarking centre, and the jeweller the article was registered to.
