Understanding GST verification

What is GST verification?

GST verification is the process of confirming that a GSTIN — the Goods and Services Tax Identification Number — is genuine and belongs to an actively registered business, by checking it against GST records rather than trusting a number on an invoice or a form.

A business submits the GSTIN, VerifyAll returns the registration details as held on record — legal name, trade name, status, constitution of business, registration date, place of business and jurisdiction — and produces a report. It is a core step in vendor onboarding, invoice and input-tax-credit checks, and KYB.

Why businesses do it

To confirm a vendor or counterparty is a real, registered business before raising a purchase order, making a payment or claiming input tax credit.

What it validates

That the GSTIN exists on the GST system, its current status, and the legal name and place of business registered against it.

How it fits into KYB

It is usually the first identity check on a business entity, run before PAN, company and director checks.

When it is used

At vendor and supplier onboarding, procurement, invoice processing, marketplace seller sign-up and periodic compliance reviews.

What it confirms

What a completed check confirms

The exact fields returned can vary by what the GST system holds for the business at the time of the check.

  • The GSTIN is real and registered on the GST system
  • Legal name of the registered business
  • Trade name, where it differs from the legal name
  • GSTIN status — Active, Cancelled, Suspended or Provisional
  • Date of registration
  • Constitution of business — proprietorship, partnership, private limited, LLP and so on
  • Taxpayer type — Regular, Composition, Casual, Input Service Distributor and so on
  • Principal place of business
  • Additional places of business, where listed
  • Nature of business activities
  • State jurisdiction and Centre jurisdiction
  • Date of cancellation, where the GSTIN is cancelled

The deliverable

A verification report you can keep

  • What it contains: the GSTIN, legal name, trade name, status, date of registration, constitution of business, taxpayer type, principal and additional places of business, and state and Centre jurisdiction, with a timestamp.
  • How businesses use it: as evidence a counterparty is registered, in vendor master records, procurement files and input-tax-credit documentation.
  • How to download it: from the verification result in your VerifyAll dashboard, once the check completes.
  • Where it fits: attach it to the vendor, supplier or partner record it belongs to, alongside your PAN, company and AML checks.

Use cases

How businesses use GST Verification

GST verification is usually the first check a business runs on another business — before a payment, a purchase order or an input-tax-credit claim.

Vendor & supplier onboarding

Confirm a new vendor is a registered business before adding them to your vendor master.

Procurement & PO approval

Check the GSTIN before a purchase order is raised or approved.

Invoice & input tax credit

Verify the supplier GSTIN on an invoice before claiming input tax credit.

Marketplace seller onboarding

Verify seller GST registration during sign-up.

Lending & trade finance

Confirm a borrower or applicant business is GST-registered and active.

Partner & distributor onboarding

Verify the GST status of channel partners and distributors.

B2B customer onboarding

Confirm a business customer’s registration during account opening.

Compliance & audit reviews

Re-check vendor GSTINs periodically for cancellations or status changes.
