Understanding TAN verification

What is TAN verification?

TAN verification is the process of confirming that a Tax Deduction and Collection Account Number is genuine and belongs to the entity presenting it, by checking it against Income Tax records rather than trusting a number on a challan or a TDS certificate.

A business submits the TAN, VerifyAll returns the deductor details as held on record — the registered name, category, address and jurisdiction — and produces a report. It is used to confirm that a counterparty is a valid tax deductor before payments, TDS reconciliation or vendor onboarding.

Why businesses do it

To confirm a counterparty is a registered tax deductor before they deduct TDS on your payments, or before you accept their TDS certificates.

What it validates

That the TAN exists in Income Tax records, and the deductor name and jurisdiction registered against it.

How it fits into KYB

It is a tax-registration check on a business entity, run alongside GST and PAN verification.

When it is used

At vendor onboarding, TDS reconciliation, payroll-vendor checks and compliance reviews.

What it confirms

What a completed check confirms

The exact fields returned can vary by what Income Tax records hold for the TAN at the time of the check.

  • The TAN is real and registered in Income Tax records
  • Name of the deductor or collector as per records
  • Category — company, firm, individual, government and so on
  • Registered address of the deductor
  • Assessing Officer (AO) code and jurisdiction
  • Whether the TAN is currently active

The deliverable

A verification report you can keep

  • What it contains: the TAN, the registered deductor name, category, address and Assessing Officer jurisdiction, with a timestamp for the check.
  • How businesses use it: as evidence a counterparty is a valid tax deductor, in vendor master records and TDS reconciliation files.
  • How to download it: from the verification result in your VerifyAll dashboard, once the check completes.
  • Where it fits: attach it to the vendor or counterparty record it belongs to, alongside your GST, PAN and company checks.

Use cases

How businesses use TAN Verification

TAN verification confirms a counterparty is a registered tax deductor — the entity behind the TDS on a payment or a certificate.

Vendor & counterparty onboarding

Confirm a counterparty’s TAN before adding them to your vendor master.

TDS reconciliation

Match the deductor name on a TDS certificate against the TAN on record.

Payroll & staffing vendors

Confirm a counterparty’s tax registrations during underwriting.

Audit & due diligence

Re-check counterparty TANs during periodic compliance and due-diligence reviews.
